MISHAPS TO CUMBERS.
Narrow Escapes on Fyfe’s Pass Trip.
Two thrilling incidents occurred during the retreat from an attempt to cross Fyfe’s Pass from the Mueller Glacier to the Landsborough Valley, undertaken during Easter by Messrs A. J. Scott (Christchurch) and D. W. Foster (Wellington), accompanied by Guide Vic Williams, of the Mount Cook Hermitage. Guide Williams had a narrow escape
when the upper lip of a schrund broke away in front of him as he was cutting steps in the ice above it. The party was on an ice slope, and, as all were roped together, nothing could have saved the others if the leader had been swept down. Later in the day, after regaining
JFyie's Pass, the party climbed Mount Montgomery (7661 feet) and continud down the steep ice slopes to the head of the Mueller Glacier.
A step broke under pne man and, overbalanced by his heivy pack, he rolld down the slope and fell into a crevasse, landing: on a ledge of snow some twenty feet down. This was a fortunate escape, as the ledge was small and under it the crevasse yawned for apparently two hundred feet. The climbers were not roped at the time.
