BOWLING.

New Green Opened at Wool* ton. The first bowling club in New Zealand attached to a church was opened on Saturday at St John’s Woolston, culminating two years* endeavour on the part of the men’s . club of the churcn. The green, which is situated at the Pear of the church, has accommodation for three rinks, and the newly-formed club has a membership of thirty. It is intended to play for the rest of this season, and to seek affiliation with the Christchurch Bowling Centre next year. ** 1 am very proud that we are going to open our howling green at last,” said the Rev F. A. Tooley, vicar of the church. “ Five years ago, when I came to Woolston, the church was more or less under petticoat government—the women were in charge—but now the men have come into power and thus came the bowling green. “ What was once an untidy bit of ground was dug up, planted in potatoes, and then, last November, sown with grass. You must agree that in this short time we have got a very nice little green. Some people advised us not to play this season, but we felt that if we did not do so, we would not have got going at all.” The Rev W. H. Orbell, formerly vicar of St John's, and now vicar at Papanui, said that he was glad a useless bit of ground had been made good us« of. He hoped that the club would serve to keep the men of the parish together. Mr J. B. Johns, a past-president of the Shirley Club, added his congratulations. ” There is no more social game than bowls,” he said. Mr W. J. Woodbury (Beckenham) also spoke. Mrs Toobey then threw down the first jack, and Mr Tooley bowled the first bowl. Elmwood Club. Club matches are now reaching finality.
