TROTTING NOTES.

m si m is is is m ® si s m ® m © m m is m m for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s autumn meeting are due to-morrow, at noon. * # * * Nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club’s autumn meeting will close on February 22, at 8 p.m. Entries for the trotting events at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting will close on February 23, at 8 p.m. * * *:« * Acceptances for the trotting events to be decided at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting will close on February 23. F. J. Smith won three races at Auckland on Saturday with Kuini, Wrecker and Worthy Light. GUMDIGGER. The Wellsford-owned pacer, Gumdigger, has reached Epsom and has gone into G. Webb's charge, pending the arrival of his owner, G. A. Williamson. Gumdigger bears a muscular appearance and has evidently done a good deal of solid work since going north after the Christmas meeting. Gumdigger, in spite of his recent failures, is a good pacer when thoroughly attuned, and if he repeats his South Island form of last season should have reasonable prospects of earning some money at the approaching meetings in the North Island. UNBEATEN THIS SEASON. Worthy Light holds an unbeaten record this season, having won five races since August 1, and he looks like adding three or four more to his credit before the season is concluded. He is one of the prominent members of F. J. Smith’s team and is by the American sire Worthy Bond from Illumination. Worthy Light competed three times last season for one win. He is only a young horse and has performed creditably up to a mile and a half. Later on he may be seen to advantage over two miles. TO BE MATED. Enigma has now reached a class where she is finding it hard to pay her way, and while she wili be kept going this season, and probably well into the next, D. Teahen intends mating her with Sonoma Harvester in the coming season. Enigma is a good-ac-tioned trotter, and, being a Nelson Bingen mare, she should mate well with a stallion who has left more useful trotters than pacers. FIRST UP WINS. The Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, added another to his record of winners first time out when he won with • Wrecker in the Otahuhu Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. Smith has a remarkably good list of successes with horses the first time he starts them, and it was probably on that account, and the fact that Smith was his trainer, that Wrecker was sent out favourite. That Wrecker should have won by half a length in 4min 32 l-ssec on a course that was reported to have been in excellent order does not say much for the opposition. INDIANAPOLIS. Indianapolis is usually driven by C. Dunleavy in his training work, and the smile on Claude’s face when the big horse strolls past the other members of W. J. Tomkinson’s team is a feature of the proceedings." Usually trainers drive the star members of their team in their private essays, but not so W. J. Tomkmson, who is content to try his ingenuity on one that requires Correcting in gait, or squaring up, and leave the machine-like going horses to Dunleavy, whose patience and ability are an asset to the establishment that employs him. HOME BREW. _ The pacing mare Home Brew, who during the past two seasons has gained several minor placings in novice races, has recently joined G. T. Mitchell’s stable at Cambridge, and, if present plans are adhered to, she will compete at autumn meetings in the North Island. Although Home Brew is the only one from Mitchell’s stable engaged at the Auckland meeting, he is keeping Wee Machine, Winaway and Scotch Reel going in view of the country fixtures: Mitchell also has two promising two-year-old pacers in work, by Peter Bingen and David M’Elwyn respectively. Arrangements were made for a broadcast of Saturday’s races at Riccarton, for the benefit of visitors to the course. Unfortunately the breakdown of one of the power lines caused serious complications, and though the trouble was rectified to some extent, the result was not so satisfactory as it was hoped.
