SUMMER AT THE RACES.

Fashions to Suit the Season. GAY AND ANIMATED SCENE. A fleeting glimpse of that elusive lady, Summer, was seen in the city today, and her appearance fortunately coincided with the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton. At this time of the year the racecourse is at its best. The flower beds are bright with colour, which even outshines the colours of the women’s frocks. The result is that the scene is a gay and animated one. A few smart ensembles were outstanding among the welter of pretty summery frocks. Frills fluttered in the breeze, high heels went taptapping up and down the steps of the grandstand, shooting sticks were unfolded, the band played now hauntingly, now gaily, and overhead the sunshine was really hot. In fact, Riccarton was its usual bright self. The crowd continued to arrive during the early part of the afternoon, until the attendance for an odd race day was a good one. Mrs A. S. Elworthy, wife of the chairman, wore a sniartly striped crepe de chine frock with an elbow-length cape collar. . Her becoming wide-brimmed hat ..was of beige straw, and her en§eirib'le was completed with a pair of .long beige gloves. Others present included: Lady Clifford, Lady Ward, Mesdames H. A. If night, J.
