Earthquake Risks.
Dear Sir,—There is certainly an urgent need in New Zealand of national building regulations to reduce to a minimum the risks we are likely to face from future earthquakes. It has been pointed out in Christchurch, for instance, by the City Engineer that in the event of a severe earthquake the greatest danger would lie in existing buildings. Everywhere within the four belts in Christchurch object lessons on what to avoid in erecting new buildings can be seen. Every street has overhanging cornices, parapets and gable walls, which would obviously collapse in a severe earthquake. Citizens who recall the past should let members of Parliament know that adequate regulations to protect the people should be made compulsory throughout the whole of New Zealand.—l am, etc., WHY FORGET.
