SUMNER NEWS.

Largs Attendance at Harvest Festival. There was a large attendance at the harvest festival of the Sumner Corps of the Salvation Army. The stage was beautifully decorated by means of a trellis arch which, decorated with asparagus and evergreens, made an effective background for the attractive display of fruit, flowers and vegetables contributed by the residents. The Linwood officers, Adjutant and Mrs Brown, and the band rendered an enjoyable programme of instrumental and vocal items, w’hich was keenly appreciated. The programme included a hymn study and a selection. Vocal solos were contributed by Mrs Brown, Sister Lawson, Sister E. Freeman and Brother S. Wallace. Brother Dawson contributed a recitation and Brothers J. Clark and S. Wallace a vocal duet. Ensign Ward, on behalf of the Sumner Corps, thanked the visitors who had given such pleasure to the congregation. At the conclusion of the festival the gifts were disposed of by means of a Dutch auction and the finance thus raised was devoted to the assistance of the work of the Salvation Army in Sumner. Sumner Sunday Schools. A meeting of the representatives of the Sunday schools of Sumner, including those of the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches and that of the Salvation Army was recently held for the purpose of discussing the spiritual welfare of the children in the borough. The opinion was generally expressed that there were many children who did not attend any Sunday school, and it was agreed to canvass the whole of the borough in the Sumner portion with a view to seeking the co-operation of the parents in this matter and inviting them to send children of four years and upwards to a Sunday school of their choice. For this purpose the borough was divided into sections and committees were appointed to visit each in an endeavour to inform the parents what the united Sunday schools were endeavouring to do. It was stated that this had been done in certain districts of the North Island and had proved a success. This is the first occasion on which such action has been taken in the Sumner district. The chairman thanked the delegates for their attendance and expressed the hope that their united efforts would result in much more interest being taken in the good work at present being done in all the Sunday schools. District High School. The staffing of the Sumner District High School, which last year gave occasion for some anxiety, has been greatly improved by the provisions of the new regulations. Extra teachers have been appointed and the total is

now two more than the number allowed at the end of last year. In dental matters, too, progress has been made, the committee having entered into suitable arrangements for the treatment of children who, for age and other reasons, are not eligible for treatment at the school clinic. This arrangement also , stands' good for the other schools under the combined dental committee. Bowling Club. Very, little progress has been made this week with the club championships of the Sumner Bowling Club. One game only was played, that of the championship pairs. In this, Martin and Chambers defeated Forrest and Peek. There was nothing outstanding in the game, the green being very heavy and the scoring being of a very ordinary type. Martin has won this event four years in succession. He is in a very good position to win the championship singles for the sixth year in succession, and if he succeeds in winning the rinks championship, and it is generally thought than he can do it, then he will have made a record in the history of the club. With Chambers, Martin will play off the final of the Maddison Trophy in the city against New Brighton. He brought this cup to the Sumner Club some three years ago for the first time in the history of the club. Croquet.
