ART UNION POLICY.

Cabinet’s Allocation of Proceeds. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 16. Consideration has been given by Cabinet to the question of policy to be pursued for the future in the disposal of profits from art unions. This was considered desirable in view of the enormous increase in the number and nature of applications being received by the authorities for participation in the profits of the £4OOO alluvial gold art unions. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon J. A. Young, states that Cabinet has decided that profits should be allotted only to institutions of a national character and to those providing social services of a charitable and philanthropic nature. The Minister remarked that in the last six art unions of which money had been distributed the proceeds totalled £57,000, and of this sum no less than £45.000 was given to institutions for social relief purposes. Of the £45,000, £38.000 went to mayors’ relief and similar funds in various parts of the Dominion.
