PLIGHT OF DAIRYING

Round Table Discussion Proposed. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 15. Replying to a deputation from the Farmers’ Union, which waited on him to-day, urging the setting-up of a Royal Commission to investigate the plight of the dairy industry, Mr Forbes suggested that there should be a round table conference among members of the Government, the Farmers’ Union and the Dairy Board to see what could be done to improve the outlook. He emphasised the Government’s sympathy for the dairy farmers, and said he thought better results could be accomplished by a round table discussion than by the appointment of a Royal Commission. If a conference was held, they would have the opinions of men who had first-class knowledge of the conditions in the industry. Mr W. J. Poison said the union would welcome the Prime Minister’s proposal, as it was imperative that something should be done immediately to ease the position of the dairy farmers. He hoped the quota, as well as other aspects, would be dealt with by the conference.
