BYRD IN TROUBLE.
Cannot Find Way Through Pack Ice. CHARTING THE SEA-BOTTOM. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received February' 16, 10.9 a.m.) NEW YORK, February 14. A message from Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd aboard the Bear of Oakland sa>'s that the icse apparently has closed in between the vessel and Little America and after trying- several hundred d’fiereift courses in an effort to break through the heavy ice pack Admiral B3'rd is anxious to return to Little America, but the ship can make no progress in any direction, although it has been tr3 r ing to proceed southward, or south-eastward. The predicament which the vessel is in, however, offers a wonderful opportunity of charting the bottom of an unknown sea. This was done with the “ sonic depth finding apparatus,” with which a sharp sound is created under water and echoed back from the bottom. From this the depth can be calculated b3' counting the lapse of time between the sound and the echo.
