TEMPERANCE UNION

Meeting of Christchurch Branch. Miss Henderson presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U.. held on Wednesday. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs Geo. Simpson. Temperance Facts were read. Mrs Adkins. Miss Blackwell reminded members that gifts of clothing would be acceptable for the box for the Unemployment Belief Depot. A grant of £2 2s was made to the Fresh Air Fund. It was decided to discuss at the next meeting arrangements for the annual tea to be held at the Jubilee Home in March. It was decided to ask Mrs T. E. Taylor to speak to members on certain remits regardingthe Mental Defectives Act received from the National Council Convention. Members were reminded that Frances Willard Day would he celebrated at the Papanui. At a meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union on Thursday, Mrs Graham presided over a good attendance. Mrs Elliott led the devotional service. The secretary was asked to send a letter of thanks to Mrs J. Simpson for a donation to the funds. Arrangements were made for the garden party to be held at the residence of Mr F. J. Carr early in March, instead of February as first suggested. A letter was received from the Dominion headquarters asking for gifts for a fair in connection with the Jubilee Convention. Each member promised a gift. After a discussion it was decided not to send a delegate to the convention.
