Gatherings Held in Town and Country. FLANNEL DANCE. An enjoyable flannel dance was held in St Mary's Hall, Manchester Street., last evening. The dance was organised by St Mary’s Debating Societv. Marist Brothers Old Boys and St Bede’s Old Boys to assist the funds of their Easter conference. The committee responsible for the arrangements and the success of the evening was as follows:—Messrs R. St Michael's Hall was recently the rcene of an enjoyable party, when a large number of guest? attended at the invitation of Miss Maureen Jones to celebrate the coming of age of her brother, Mr L. F. Jones, eldest son of the late Mr L. G. F. Jones of Oamaru and grandson of the late Captain Fitzharding Jones, of Dunedin. The evening was spent in games, items and dancing. During supper the usual toasts were honoured and the guest of honour was presented with a gold key by his mother, Mrs M. W. Crouch. Mr K. R. Owen was M.C.

Surprise Party. A surprise party visited the home of Mrs Carey, Ollivier’s Road, Linwood, on Wednesday evening to celebrate the birthday of Miss Irene Ducan. A pleasant time was spent with competitions and games. The winners of the competitions were Misses Tillie Torrens and Janice Forcey. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs P. O. Carey. The programme consisted of musical items and games. Mrs M’Millan, in making a presentation to the guests of honour, spoke of their help in connection with the sports grounds and wished them prosperity and happiness in their new homes. An enjoyable social was held in th Papanui Methodist Schoolroom on Wednesday by the Young Men’s Bible Class. Mr E. Dailey presided, and dur ing the evening a presentation of a fine side companion was made by Mr lan Hopper to Mr A. Franklin. Mr Hopper said Mr Franklin had been Bible Class leader for some considerable time, and in view of his approaching marriage the class wished him every happiness in the future. Games and competitions were held during the evening. Surprise Party. A very enjoyable evening was spen at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. J Clark. Eversleigh Street, recently. Th part)', which was given in honour o their daughter Amy, was a surprise foi the guest of honour, who received ? number of gifts from her friends.
