PLUNKET SHIELD.
Match Between Otago and Wellington. HOME ELEVEN BATTING. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, February 16. The weather was warm but light rain fell shortly after ten o’clock and the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Wellington, which was timed to start at eleven o’clock, was delayed for over an hour. Otago won the toss and batted. At lunch they had scored 46 without loss. Despite the rain, the ground w’as in excellent order, and the wicket, which had been covered, was on the easy side. Nimmo and Hatch were twelfth men for Otago and Wellington respectively. Ditchfield and Cavanagh opened Otago’s innings to the bowling of Parsloe and Blundell. The second ball of Blundell’s first over was despatched by Cavanagh to the off boundary. Ditchfield turned Parsloe to square leg for a brace to open his account. Four byes brought ten up. At 21 Crook replaced Parsloe, who went to the other end, and Cavanagh drove him for two fours, to make the total 30. Cavanagh at this stage had put on 20 and Ditchfield 9. The weather was now ideal, being warm and calm. The Wellington fieldsmen were doing everything required of them. Another change of bowling was made, Newman, the left-hander, giving Parsloe a spell. Ditchfield leg-glanced Newman for a single to bring 40 up, and Cavanagh, with a powerful stroke, placed him through the covers, to enter the thirties. Scores:— OTAGOFirst Innings.
