A Yachting Proposal.

Dear Sir,—Those Canterbury advocates of a “ liberty within limits ” design for an ISft New Zealand Open Championship race do not say to whom the trophy should be awarded. Obviously it should gO to the man who turned out the fastest boat, and a contest on these lines could go on almost indefinitely until every avenue of liberty or latitude permitted had been exploited to the utmost. Truly a professional builder’s paradise. Strong men naturally are __ to take a firm, repelling stand' The New Zealand Yachting Council is the product of the yachtsmen who every time prefer to know the extent of their own skill, rather than that of the professional builder. It has been suggested that the professional builders might form their own associations and council, and ascertain by competition who can build the fastest boat. Meantime the yachtsman prefers to know if he can sail a standardised one design better than the other fellow, and his continued progressive development along these lines should not be interrupted by those sadly misguided good fellows who have forgotten overnight that the now standardised one design Sander' Cup racing has been improved 100 per cent. The New Zealand Yachting Council can be relied upon to foster this aspiration, because they know that it is their duty to encourage class racing, the best of all racing.—l am, etc., L. WADDEL.
