Pope Says War is a Menace to Civilisation. PARIS, February 6. “ There is at present no human institution capable of imposing on all the nations any sort of international code as the Catholic Church has succeeded in doing,” the Pope told “ Intransigeant,” in the first interview given to a newspaper since his accession. “We should not,” the Pope said, “ try to conceal the

danger of a conflagration, which, if it comes, must involve the whole of Europe, perhaps the entire world, and might even cause the collapse of Christian civilisation. It is m' enough to seek peace bv treaties and documents: peace must live in men’s desires.

“ Patriotism is in itself a laudable sentiment, but one of the most troublesome excesses of modern times is that which, under the guise of patriotism, exalts the nation above all else. We must condemn, not patriotism, but the fatalism of certain people whose only ideal is an evergreater glorification of their country, no matter how achieved.”
