SWIMMING.

Excellent Prospects for Championships.

CREAM OF TALENT.

Swimming of a sustained high standard never before seen in Christchurch will be provided by the cream of New Zealand talent, both men and women, at the national swimming championships which will be held in the.new St Albans bath, starting on Saturday. The Dominion meeting was last conducted in the city nine years ago, but since that time the performances of the champions have shown remarkable improvement.

E very thing Is ready for the most brilliant championship gathering in New Zealand swimming history. Every notable performer in the Dominion will be present, and, indeed, so great are the entries that heats, will be necessary in practically every title event, a situation that is unique. The new bath is in splendid order, and ample seating accommodation has been provided. The championship programme is substantial, and extends, until next Wednesday. Saturday, Monday and Wednesday morning will see heats and water polo rounds, while the big carnivals will be those of Saturday afternoon and Monday and Wednesday evenings. The Annette Kellerman Cup three-mile distance race will be swum in Lyttelton Harbour on Tuesday afternoon. Careful arrangements have been made to entertain the many visitors, for many centres will he sending teams, and the schedule Includes a picnic at Waikuku on Sunday and a motor run on Monday afternoon. Prospects indicate that practically every title will be won only after a close tussle both in men's and women’s events. As far as the Yaldhurst Shield, held by Auckland as premier province. Is concerned, indications are that possession will not change. While Auckland are sending down a strong men's team, their women swimmers will nearly “ scoop the pool.” It is a fact, regrettable but true, that seldom has Canterbury been able to put forward women performers who can cope with Auckland’s best, and it is Auckland’s women who ensure that province's shield victories. Saturday. Morning.—Two heats in each of the men’s 100yds championship, women’s 220yds and men’s 220yds breaststroke. Afternoon.—Men’s mile, finals of men’s 100yds and 220yds breast-stroke, women’s 220yds and first round of men’s dive. Handicaps: 66 2-3yds intermediate hoys’, G 6 2-3 y d s men and 33 l-3yds women, 100yds mixed backstroke. Monday. M,orning.—Two heats in each of men’s 150yds backstroke. 220yds and 880yds and women’s 100j-ds. Evening—Women’s 100yds backstroke, women’s dive, finals men’s backstroke. 220yds and 880yds and women’s 100yds. Handicaps: 100yds intermediate boys’, 33 l-3yds women, 100yds men and 200yds relay. Wednesday. Morning.—Two heats in each of men's 440yds and women’s 440yds. Evening.—Women’s 220yds breaststroke, men’s dive (final round), finals men’s and women’s 440yds, 500yds intercentre flying squadron (five aside), 50 yds invitation scratch race, exhibition high and fancy diving. Handicaps: Men’s 100yds breaststroke and men’s 200yds. ‘ The polo draw will have to be rearranged, as advice was received last evening that the Auckland team will not come south, as previously stated by the Auckland Centre. A draw had been prepared to include the Auckland team, and provided for games on Saturday morning and afternoon, Monday morning and evening and Wednesday evening. Now there will be no necessity for games on Saturday and Monday morniqp. Inter-club Racing. East Christchurch swimmers had a successful evening at their own interclub carnival held in the Tepid Bath last evening, for that club's teams retained both the Bryce and Hollander Cups for inter-club relay racing. The carnival deserved a better attendance for there were some close struggles and once again the work of the Canterbury Centre’s handicapping committee produced even results. C. Cliff, who has made a habit of breaking Canterbury intermediate records this season, won the intermediate boys’ 440yds title easily with a good swim of omin 39 2'-ssee, well under his own provincial record of smin 52 l-ssec and just under 9see slower than N. Crump’s Dominion record. Another record was lowered in the 75.yds intermediate girls' backstroke event, when Misses R. Low' and A. Morris raced together the whole way to dead-heat in 61 l-ssec, 1 3-ssec under Miss Morris’s Canterbury record.
