LEWIS PASS CAMPS.

Men Badly in Need of

Underclothing.

At the request of the Mayor (Mr DG. Sullivan, M.P.), Major G. F. Dry, of the Salvation Army, and Mr J. F. Eames, assistant town clerk, visited the Lewis Pass cam£s yesterday and supplied the men with a quantity of much-needed underclothing. Mr Eames said this morning that neither Major Dry nor himself discussed with any of the men their grievances against the Public Works Department, the visit having been made simply for the purpose of improving as far as possible the conditions under which the men lived. They took up a quantity of underclothing, some of which had been collected, and the balance provided by the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. At the No. 1 camp a fresh outfit was given to a man who had lost everything when his tent was burnt recently, and underclothing was supplied to men in both camps. Mr Eames said it was raining very heavily when they arrived at the No. 2 camp, and no work was being done. The men were very grateful for the clothing, which some of them needed very urgently.
