FIRM DEFRAUDED.
Friendless Young Waitress’s Lapse.
A charge of false pretences was preferred against a waitress, aged 17 years, at a sitting of the Children’s Court this morning. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., presided.
It was stated by Chief Detective Dunlop that the girl had gone to the D.I.C. and bought a hat, shoes and dress materials to a value of £4 5s Id, charging them without authority to an account she knew was in existence there. When interviewed by Detective M’Clung the girl had admitted the offence frankly. The girl’s circumstances were unusual in that her mother' was dead and her father in Auckland. She had an aunt and uncle in Christchurch, but they took no interest in her. She had nowhere to go recently when she got into touch with Adjutant Wood of the Salvation Army. The Adjutant had found her a position. The girl was practically friendless.
The girl was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months, a condition being that she remain in the Salvation Army Home for that period.
