The attempt by two men in a high-speed motor-boat to make a fifty-mile dash across Cook Strait resulted in the death of Mr H. Clarke, of Wellington. With Mr Clarke, the owner of the boat, was Mr F. W. Barrett-Wood, of Melbourne. The craft capsized off Cape Terawhiti. After a terrible ordeal in the water, lasting three hours, the men were picked up by a passing steamer. Mr Clarke died shortly after. The photograph shows Mr Clarke at the wheel of one of his racing craft. Inset: Mr F. W. Barrett-Wood.
