DEATH OF RADIO MAN.

Funeral of Mr Walter Ronald Mintrom. The funeral took place at the Bromley Cemetery this afternoon of Mr Walter Ronald Mintrom, Barton Street, Woolston. Mr Mintrom took an active interest in radio up to the time of his death, and he was one of the best* known amateur transmitters in Christchurch. He owned and operated station ZL3AW, and did sterling work during the Napier earthquake, being in direct communication with the stricken area for three days. Mr Mintrom also had the distinction of lighting up a house in America by transmitting a word of four letters. During the Byrd Antarctic expedition in 1930 he received and transmitted a number of messages from and to the expedition. Wireless was a hobby which he had followed since his boyhood days, and besides being a member of the Canterbury Radio Transmitters’ Association, he was a member of the American Radio Relay League. For the past seven years he had been a member of the auxiliary staff of the Woolston Fire Brigade. The chief mourners were his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Mintrom, his brothers, Messrs K. and T. Mintrom, Mr and Mrs W. Oliver, Mr and Mrs W. Andrews (Sydney), and Miss H. Maitland. The service at the graveside was taken by the Rev J. Harris.

The pall-bearers at the house and graveside were four members of the Woolston Fire Brigade, under StationOfficer Parry. . Others present were: Messrs A. Lambert, M’George, A. Jones, R. Wells, G. Fairbairn, T. Ford, W. Oliver, Dacombe, J. Lloyd, R. Taylor, W. Bell, B. Lloyd, D. Raich, A. Lanyon, C. Carey, J. Johansen, M. Myers, D. Elm, F. Mintrom, J. Mintrom, W. Whiting, Kerr, Ward, A. Dowling, J. Hopping and S. Robin.
