WEST WIN ON FIRST INNINGS.

C. J. Oliver Scores Century of Sydenham’s Total. ST ALBANS BEAT COLLEGIANS. DESPITE A GREAT INNINGS of 102 by C. J. Oliver, Sydenham failed by 21 runs to catch the West Christchurch score of 254 in the senior cricket competition to-day. Hope, ■with six for 79, struck good form and fully deserved his success. West won on the first innings. In their second innings West at 6 p.m. had scored 60 for one wicket. East Christchurch failed to avoid a follow-on in their match against Riccarton, scoring only 228. Riecarton, in their first innings, declared with 341 on the hoard for the loss of three wickets. At 6 o’clock East had scored 130 for the loss of eight wickets.

A fine and bright batting display by F. P. O'Brien for St Albans against Old Collegians was a feature of the cricket at Rugby Park. In scoring over a century he hit three splendid sixes, two landing on the pavilion root. St Albans made 344 and won by 6 runs on the first innings. Losing three wickets for 19 runs in the first half-hour. Old Boys failed badly against Lancaster Park. They were all out half an hour after tea for 161. W. A. Ifadlee (47) and H. R. Escott (40) were the only batsmen to make a showing. R. J. Read did all the damage, taking six wickets for 57 runs. Old Boys followed on, needing 218 runs to save them from outright defeat. Lancaster Park seemed assured of their 8-point win at 6 o’clock, when Old Boys had scored 118 for five wickets. Sydenham v. West. On a wicket at Hagley No. 1 that was fast and playing true Sydenham, with one wicket down for 72 runs, continued their effort to catch the 254 scored against them by West Christchurch. Bellamy (36) and Oliver (30) were the not out men, and against Hope, Vincent, Patrick, and Findlay they started in confident manner. The score crept up to 89 before Bellamy misjudged a good one from Hope and went leg before wicket for ,45. Butterfield shaped well before being clean bowled by Hope, who was finding his length arid proving dangerous.- 103— & —ll. Then Riley joined Oliver, and the runs came steadily. Oliver, with some fine on-side shots, soon ran past his half-century, and Riley played with ease and judgment. Sydenham had nine down for 203 when Patrick, the last man, joined Oliver. The last-named, after passing his century, was missed in slips. Next over he was run out after batting through the innings for 102. West won on the first innings by 21 runs. WEST CHRISTCHURCH. M. Condliffe and T. Birch were the St Albans opening batsmen, Gibson and Lester taking up the attack. Birch opened hiss account by scoring a five off Gibson, four of them coming from an overthrow. Condliffe, in the next over, got Lester away to the boundary. Shortly after he survived a confident appeal for a catch off Gibson. Alexander relieved Gibson and his third ball was tipped by Birch into the wicket-keeper’s hands. 31— 1 —14. Condliffe then lifted Alexander for two successive sixes, and drove him to the leg for four, eighteen coming off the over. Fifty came up an hour's play. Condliffe scored 40 in as many minutes. Graham over from Alexander and Condliffe tipped a fast one to be taken by Jackso h- behind the wickets. Two wickets were down for 66. Rfcores:— en.«* OLD COLLEGIANS. ir: First Innings. L. R. Cromb's first ball swung away slightly to knock Burrows’s off stump back. One wicket was down for one run. W. A. Hadlee joined Moffat, and nine more runs were added. Then Moffat reached out at a rising ball from Cromb, and T. Kennedy took the catch in slips. 10—2—2. Things looked bad for Old Boys when L. H. Fisher went lbw to R. J. Read. 19 —3—3. M. L. Page and Hadle>e settled down to retrieve the position, and playing carefully, brought 50 up after fifty-three minutes. S. J. Steady scoring on the part of East Christchurch marked the resumption of the game against Riecarton on the third wicket at Hagley Park, R. W. Coupland and K. Wilson carrying the total from three for 84 at the start of the afternoon to 125 for four. Riccarton in their first innings declared with three wickets down for 341. Wilson’s was the first wicket of the afternoon to fall—caught at first slip by Andrews from the bowling of Roberts, who was making plenty of pace off the pitch. T. F. Mullan joined Coupland and had not been at the wickets long before -he had collected a row of five fours and a six against his name, the six at the expense of A. W. Roberts. He pounded C.. T. Rix for three fours and a two in one over, but skied the last bail, giving S. Andrews a hot chance, which was accepted. Mullan scored 43 in 21 minutes. Coupland meanwhile was scoring . consistently if cautiously. H. Davis had a short stay, a smart return from Rix scattering the bails, P. Allsopp's innings was terminated, after collecting two fours, by getting his leg in front to Rix. R. E. Henderson, a temporarily promoted junior, partnered Coupland, who reached 69 before being clean bowled by Rix with a yorker. In the next over a beautiful catch by Bull, off Powell’s bowling, in the slips disposed of Henderson. East were all out for 228, failing to avoid a follow-on and assuring Riccarton of a first innings win. Scores:— RICCARTON. First innings 341 EAST CHRISTCHURCH. First inings. E.
