Opals Discovered in Attache Case. LONDON, January 19. How 1665 opals, valued at £416, were discovered in attache cases was related at Clerkenwell Police Court to-day, when Frank Charles Lockwood, 29, an opal merchant, formerly of Sydney, was charged with- having stolen them from his uncle, Charles James Lockwood, representative, of an opal company in Sydney. The case had previously been adjourned to enable the police to search packages which the accused had left in a safe deposit. To-day the prosecution said that the packages contained letters from Australia addressed to Lockwood, senior. Their contents effectually disposed of i the suggestion that accused had any Tight to the opals. The safe deposit also contained a ticket for two packets deposited at a. coaching station, which proved to be attache cases containing the opals. Accused asked whether, now that the prosecutor had obtained the opals, he would drop the case. The prosecution said that Lockwood’s uncle was willing that this eburse be adopted, but magistrate committed the accusedfor trial.
