CHILDREN’S CLOTHES.

School uniforms have their uses, and one must accept them as a necessary evil, but they do create a difficulty in the matter of how to dress the children during holiday time. It is an expensive business to fit a girl out with a complete set of dresses for the holidays, apart from her school uniforms, when it is fairly certain that she will have out-grown everything by the time the next holidays come round. All children’s frocks should be made with provision for lengthening and letting out in all directions. Some of the sheps show excellent forethought in this matter, and leave deep hems on the skirts and widely-turned-in seams, so that the alterations can easily be carried out wh£n necessary. Many of the school uniforms are practical and excellent in every way, but there are some that need revision. They were designed before ideas of children’s clothes were quite as practical as they are to-day. When mothers have any improvement to suggest in a school uniform, they would be wise to offer it to the headmistress., who, after all, is just as concerned as the parents that the uniforms should be practical and as perfect as possible. The greatest care should always *be taken in choosing children’s shoes. The safest plan is to take the children to a bootshop where there is an X-ray fitting machine. The child puts on the shoes, and stands on the machine. By looking through a pair of lenses the bones of the foot are clearly seen, and the matter of distortion of the foot is settled instantly. If there is any pressure or cramping of the bones, it can be detected at a glance, even though the child is not aware of any discomfort.
