CHURCH ARMY.

Lantern Lecture on Its Rise and Work. A lantern lecture, descriptive of the work of the Church Army, will be given in St Matthew’s Schoolroom next Saturday night. The foundation of the Church Army was laid in London, about fifty-two yea_rs ago, by the Rev Wilson Carlile, then curate in an Anglican parish in London. Single-handed at first, but gradually gathering fresh helpers, he set out on a campaign of- missionary work, and now, at the age cf eighty-six years, he is at the head of a vast organisation, with 1200 young men and women conducting missions and carrying on all kinds of social work throughout England. while in recent years its activities have oeen extended to distant parts of the Empire. More than sixty caravans are in regular use by these missionaries and upwards of fifty departments are represent ed in the ramifications of the Army, haif a street being occupied by the building in 1,-on-don which has become necessary for the headquarters. A column of Church Army officers is at present working in the Christchurch diocese. Captains Roe, Pearce and Wright conducted the

week’s mission recently in St Matthew’s parish and next Saturday night, in the parish schoolroom, they will tell the story of the foundation and growth of ! the Church Army, with lantern slides to • illustrate various branches of its work.
