Decrease in Unemployed Registrations. (Special to the *' Star.'*) ASHBURTON, December 7. At the weekly meeting of the Ashburton Local Unemployment Committee this afternoon, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presiding, it was reported that at least thirteen men had not re ported for work this week and that nineteen who had worked on Monday had secured employment at Fairton, where the freezing works commenced killing operations yesterday. Compared with this time last year the number of men on the register showed a decrease of 111. The secretary (Mr W. Patterson) reported that there were 424 men on the register for work next week, as follows: Class A 26, Class B 259, Class C 139. The amount required to give the men full time was £856 10s 6d, and the allocation was £564 3s. It was decided to give 1, 24 and 34 days’ work respectively. Work at Dental Clinics. The annual report of the Department of Dental Hygiene was received at a meeting of the Ashburton West Dental Clinic last evening. It included the following Dominion statistics: Total operations, 1932, 619,390; 1929. 370,074. The number of extractions in proportion to fillings in 1922 was 24 to 1, while in 1932 the proportion was 1 to 10, showing conclusively the great benefit of the clinic in saving the children’s teeth. In her monthly report Nurse T. K. West reported that the total attendances numbered 208, total operations 293, new patients 6, patients re-examin-cd 59. Women’s Division Formed. A branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was formed at Rokeby yesterday. Mrs E. Begg, organiser, and Mrs P. G. Rickard, secretary of the executive, attended the meeting, the organiser outlining the aims and objects of the division. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs W. Penny; vice-president, Mrs V. Wilkinson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. M’Phail; committee, Mesdames C. Doig, Burgess, Gardiner and Miss Burgess. Lodge Meetings. The Court Pride of Ashburton Juvenile Foresters met last evening, when the C.R. (Brother R. Tonks) presided. A letter was received from the District Court accepting the invitation to the annual picnic and enclosing a donation of £1 Is. Brother Templeton wrote donating a gold medal to the member introducing the eightieth member. One candidate was proposed and one initiated. Brother Tonks won the silver medal donated by the District Court to the member introducing the most candidates during the year. Arrangements were made for the visit to the woollen mills on December 21. The election of officers resulted: C.R., Brother Melrose: S.C.R., Brother J. Baker; S.W., Brother J. Wilson; J.W., Brother Plunkett; 5.8., Brother Sutton: J. 8., Brother Ashbolt. The installation of officers is to be held next court night. The N.G. (Sister D. Boulton) presided over a meeting of the Daphne (Rebekah) Lodge, held last evening. Two members were reported on the sick list. Two candidates were elected
