MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS.
Suburban School Pupils Compete.
The annual scholarships in the pianoforte and violin sections of the suburban schools musical classes were competed for in a concert given by the children in the Jellicoe Hall last night. The hall was filled with parents, friends of the children and supporters of the movement. The children were from the Wharenui. East Christchurch, Opawa, Fhillipstown, Sydenham, Beckenham, Somerfield Street and West Spreydon Schools, and were the pupils of Mrs Florence A. Dalton, -L.T.C.L.. with whom have been associated Misses E. O’Keefe and Melva Edwards. Scholarships were awarded as follows:—Six months’ free private tuition —Margaret Swan, Lindsay Blackwell, Elsie Saunders. Three months’ private tuition—June Cotton. Audrey Prebble. Studio group scholarships— Kathleen Hurst, Marjorie Cornwall, Thelma Clarke. School scholarships— Julie Thornton, Geoffrey Thorpe. Free private violin tuition—Nancy Brown, Rex Marshall. Studio class scholarship —Maurice Foley, Ray Cliaston. School scholarship—lvy Watson. The judge of both sections was Mr Finlay Robb, who remarked upon the improved standard compared with last year. Special prizes were awarded to the following:—Natalie Richardson. June Jefferies, Ray Lingard, Vivienne Homes. Allan Bellamy, Ray Jacobs, Daphne Tindall and Dorothy Butters. Items by pupils of Mrs Enid Frye, L.T.C.L., were given by Betty Robb, Jack Robb, Betty Burt, Joy Duckworth. Jean Gracie and Gwendoline Kelly.
