The Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, Sir Hubert Murray, who has arrived in Sydney, stated that unless the Commonwealth subsidy of £40,000 a year to Papua is restored to its previous level of £50,000 he feared that it would be impossible for the police to hold their present line in the back country near the old German border. Failure to hold that line might entail the loss of many lives.
