OVERNIGHT ITEMS.

The Unemployment Board will not establish any new single men’s camps until a later date, according to a letter received from the board at a recent meeting of the Mount Herbert County Council. The letter was in reply to the council’s' application for a single men’s camp on the Dyer s Pass Road, and stated that owing to the difficulty of fanners in obtaining sufficient labour at the present time the board would not establish any more single men’s camps at the present.

At a meeting of the general committee of the St John Ambulance Association last evening, it was stated that there was only £2O owing on the new building, and when this had been paid the building would be free from encumbrance. The association had a substantial credit balance. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on December 13, and a sub-committee was set up to make arrangements for the presentation of certificates.

The proposal that the Highways Board might seriously consider the acquisition of the old Rangitata railwav bridge as part of the roading system was approved by the Canterbury Progress League last evening. Mr J. E. Strachan, chairman of the committee, said that the bridge was likely to be replaced by the Railway Department with a better one, and the Canterbury Automobile Association had

stated that it was an opportune time to urge the Highways Board to consider taking over the old structure as a road bridge. The committee's recommendation that the board be asked to consider taking over the bridge was adopted.

At the final executive meeting for 1933 of the Canterbury Advertising Club the following were appointed a junior executive: Messrs Lake, C. Williams, J. Wilson, R. Sly field, G. Reed, A. Clements, Ron Smith, J. Walker, the chairman of the junior executive to be a member of the general executive. A luncheon meeting was arranged for Monday, December IS. with Mr J. E. Strachan as the speaker, and it was decided to invite the members of the Businessmen's Club.

The executive of the Canterbury Progress League decided at its meeting last evening that a conference be held with the Highways Board on the occasion of its annual inspection in January on the question of sealing Bowhill Road to see if some equitable adjustment could be reached; and that a conference be held next week with representatives of the four local bodies concerned to clear up what had become an impasse in connection with the sealing of the main highway between Rolleston and Rakaia. The committee reported that it was extremely likely that the work of sealing the road between Ashburton and Hinds would be put in hand.

A hint that they might put in more time at their work was given to members of Parliamentary committees by the Prime Minister in the House yesterday afternoon, when replying to an urgent question askd by Mr Armstrong (Christchurch East). Mr Forbes revealed that the Public Petitions Committees had sat only on eight days in two months. If they took advantage of every day available they should have no difficulty in clearing up all the petitions they had before them.
