“WHACK INTO THEM.”

Professor Advises Stick for Modern Women. LONDON, November 2S. “ Bring back the stick and whack it into them.” Thus counselled Professor 11. E. Armstrong, the famous eighty-five-year-old Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the City and Guilds College, South Kensington, in an interview in which he discussed Modern Woman. “ The women are worse than the men,” he declared, “ and they want more whacking—they want a stick to wrack them back into their homes.” The professor, who was married in 1577, has seven children and fourteen grandchildren. He believes in brighter costumes for men (because they lead to brighter intellects), and he has put his theory into practice by appearing at important public dinners in a yellow waistcoat with one blue and one red lapel. “ If you make a fool of yourself in this world you get noticed, and become an important person at once,” he explained.
