“ This country is allowing too much money to go overseas every year when we should run our own art unions,” declared Councillor T. H. Butterfield, when the conduct of an art union for the purchase of Monica Park was mentioned. “We should not allow the money to go to Australia.” continued Councillor Butterfield. “ There are art unions being conducted every week in this country, and even the churches have their forms of gambling. I don’t worry about art union quibbles, but want a cheap and easy way of getting money.”
