Christchurch Club’s Annual Report. SATISFACTORY POSITION. A satisfactory financial position is disclosed in the annual report of the Christchurch Golf Club to be presented to members at the annual general meeting on December 11. References to the different activities of the club show that a successful year has been experienced. The total number on the membership roll is 360. compared with 375 in 1932. Although the club indirectly carries a heavy debt, the financial position so far as revenue and expenditure are concerned must be considered satisfactory, in the figures under review one year's subscriptions have been received with only ten months’ expenditure, but one-sixth of the revenue from subscriptions has been transferred to a contingency account to provide a fund for any future emergencies. The total receipts for the ten months, £3538. are less by £172 than the last full year, but have exceeded the estimate, whilst the expenditure is nearly £3 00 below the budget for the tenmonthly period. This has enabled generous depreciation of the plant and furniture to be made, arid a sum of £SS 14s 13 d to be carried forward. The value of working closely to a budgeted expenditure based on the anticipated revenue has again been proved, and the continuation of similar methods whilst most of the available revenue is required to meet necessary expenditure, is recommended by the committee. Every effort lias been made to curtail unnecessary expenditure and to buy good quality articles in the cheapest market. In this work the energy and foresight of the greenkeeper has been of the greatest assistance to the committee. Course Maintenance. Conditions have varied during the year, and the rainfall statistics taken at Shirlev record up to the end of October 3 5.34 in for 1933 against IS.4S:n for 1932. Over the same period there were 98 rainy days in 1933 compared with 73 in 193 2. Fairway growth was retarded by the dry weather in March and April. The exceptionally mild winter in conjunction with seed and artificial manure treatment gave a good recovery. and a fair percentage of new grass is established. Seed renovation to greens in the autumn and spring is proving successful in providing a thicker sward of permanent grass. Some treatment of clover is necessary, and with the improved water supply available shortly little fear may be entertained of detriment to the greens and course generally. The mild weather during the winter increased routine work, and no reconstruction work other than completion of “Old Nick” tee was carried out. Boundary fences have been repaired and a long length renewed during the year. Repairs to tees and bunkers occupied other time that was available. The total expenditure on course maintenance (excluding depreciation £254 ) was £955 for 1933 compared with £1056 in 3 932. New Water Supply. After making reference to the installation of the new watering scheme, the report states that the carrying out of the work is well under way. and it is anticipated that the first section will be working early in the New Year. The report details the results of competitions held during the year and states that the club is indebted to Mrs E. M. Watson for the gift of the Closing Day Cup. and to Mr J. O. Jameson for the Veterans’ Cup. Mr Norton Francis has donated a trophy for the player who beats the existing amateur course record of 68. In conclusion reference is made to the good work of the secretary (Mr J. E. Donald), the treasurer (Mr F. A. Brittan). the professional (Mr H. R. Blair) and members of the Ladies’ Club, especiallv Mesdames M. H. Godby and H. S. Lawrence. who represent the Ladies’ Club on the House Commit-
