Stiff Stemmed Dahlias.
A Garden Cornea
QNE of the chief defects to be overcome before the dahlia could be pronounced thoroughly decorative was the weak stem of the older kinds, and it is perhaps
the rigid wire-like stems of the modern dahlia that has lifted the flower to its present height of popularity. This asset is, with the decorative and paeony-flowered sorts at least, accompanied by massive, solidly-built blooms, so that, whether grown for cutting or garden dispkj, wonderful results are possible, with the same attention as was given the cactus and show varieties of a few years back. The illustration shows a typical decorative or modern stiffstemmed dahlia. T D. LENNIE.
