TRAMWAY ELECTION.

Electors May Vote at Any Booth. Though the Christchurch Tramway Board area is divided into five separate sub-districts electors are entitled to record their votes at any polling place in the election to-morrow*. Persons resident in Sumner, for instance, may vote in New Brighton if they happen to be there during the hours of polling, but for the convenience of the returning officers electors are asked to vote in their own sub-districts where possible. As a result of the lack of restrictions as to where votes may be recorded it is nec<*?c ar y to have adequate supplies of voting papers for all the sub-districts at every polling booth. In some cases polling places are situated near the boundaries of three sub-districts, and electors may be somewhat uncertain as to the district in which they are enrolled. At past elections some confusion has occurred at the polling nlace near tl e Addington workshops. This is situat ;*1 in the borough of Riccarton, but r or the purposes of tramway representation the portion of the borough bounded on the north by Foster and Alliance Streets is included in the SpreydonAddington sub-district. “Star” Will Display Progress of Poll. Unusually keen interest is being taken in the Tramway Board election this year, and in view of this fact New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., have made arrangements to announce and display the results of the poll to-morrow evening. The progress of the election will be shown on a board erected on the Cathedral Square frontage of the “ Star ” building, on which the names of all candidates will be set out. In addition, by' means of powerful electric amplifiers, the crowd in the Square will be kept informed as the results come to hand. An announcer will give a running commentary on the progress returns. As soon as the results are complete successful candidates and others will have an opportunity of addressing the crowd through the loud-speakers.

RETURNING OFFICER.

Mr Albert Freeman to Supervise. While Mr Frank Thompson is returning officer for the tramway election to-morrow, Mr Albert Freeman will be in sole charge of the deputy returning officers, and will supervise the counting of the votes. Candidates’ Views. Mr E. L. Hills stated to-day that in seeking election to the Christchurch Tramway Board as a representative of the Hills-Sumncr district, his policy was to obtain an efficient service at the lowest possible cost without rating. This could be achieved by instituting a more speedy service, which would have the effect of popularising the trams and result in increased revenue, enabling a reduction to be made in cash fares. The business of the Tramway Board would require successful candidates to devote a great deal of time to its affairs, and if elected he was in a position to give the whole of his attention to the board. Mr G. T. Thurston addressed a meeting at the corner of Jeffrey’s Road and Idris Roatl last evening, Mr W. Garrard presiding. There was a large attendance, and after dealing with Labour’s platform on the lines of previous addresses, Mr Thurston answered a number of questions. He was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. (Tramway election reports appear on page 4.)
