Championship Won by Auckland. Per Pte.i Association. GISBORNE, August 26, The New Zealand basket-ball championships were brought to a conclusion to-day in beautiful weather. The attendance throughout has been very good but to-day a record crowd was present, estimated at two thousand. In the first grade Auckland wins the New Zealand championship with 10 points, Wellington being runners-up with 8, followed by Southland 6. Canterbury 4. Otago 2, Hawke’s Bay 0. Tn the second grade Waikato, South Canterbury and Poverty Bay are equal for championship honours. Each association will hold the President’s Trophy for four months. Wairarapa were run-ners-up with 5. Then came Marlborough 4, Wairoa 3, Manawatu 0. In the inter-Island match North beat South by 16 goals to IJ. The winners, owe their victory largely to the sterling work of the defenders, who cleared re- 1 peatedly. Notes on the Games. After an even arid exciting game of a high standard Auckland beat Canterbury by three goals, determined attack alternately being met by stubborn defence. In the early stages scoring was slow, the board showing four goals to two in Auckland’s favour after the game had been in progress ten minutes. Then play became fast and at the end of the first spell Auckland led 8 to 7. With six minutes to go the score was equal, 13 each, but the closing stages again saw Auckland superior. Ashburton v. The Ashburton representative basketball team secured a well-merited win by 21 goals to 7 over the Hokitika touring team in the Ashburton Domain on Saturday afternoon. The visiting combination was a club team and not so strong as the Ashburton side. Nevertheless an interesting game was witnessed by a good attendance of spectators. At the conclusion of-the match a practice game between a High School Old Girls team and Hokitika was won by Hokitika by 16 goals to 30. Miss E. Meredith was the referee. The visiting team will leave for Timaru on Monday.
