OBITUARY.
Peter Stewart. The death occurred yesterday of Mr Peter Stewart at his residence, 43, Rutland Street, St Albans. Mr Stewart, who was 86 years of age, was, until a few years ago, one of the best-known residents of the Ashburton district. Mr Stewart was born in Perthshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1859 in the ship Cresswell. After living in Christchurch for two years he went to Halswell with his father, who bought fifty acres of land in that district. He was apprenticed to the carpentry trade at Broolcside, where he remained for a number of years, six of which he spent farming. He then moved to Seaview, Wakanui, where he took over 360 acres of land. His farming operations were highly successful and his farm became noted in the county for its fine wheat crops. Mr Stewart also bred draught horses and was a very successful exhibitor at early shows. Mr Stewart married Miss Mary M’Donald, Brookside, about sixty-six years ago, and is survived by three sons and seven daughters: Messrs J. D. Stewart (Dunsandel), A. Stewart (Kaikoura), T. Stewart (Timaru), Mesdames J. Jamieson (Ashburton) , M. Kerr (Christchurch), J. Christopherson (Christchurch), J. Adams (Christchurch), R. J. Stanley Wilson (Christchurch), J. T,. Smith (Ashburton), and Miss E. Stewart (Christchurch). As a mark of respect to Mr Stewart the flag was flown half-mast at the Ashburton Borough Council Chambers yesterday.
