OLD SAILOR’S DEATH.

Mr Rudolph Anderson, of Lyttelton.

The occurred at Lyttelton this morning*of Mr Rudolph Alexander Anderson, a very old resident of pie port, and one who was greatly esteemed by residents and seafarers. Mr Anderson had been ailing for some time and his death came as a shock to many friends.

Mr Anderson was born in Christiania, Norway, in 1854. He came out to New Zealand to settle, in the sailing ship Lyttelton. On her next voyage she was wrecked at Timaru. In 1887 he married and established a ship’s chandler’s business in Norwich Quay, which he ran until recently. In addition to serving on a number of Norwegian ships, Mr Anderson also served as sailmaker on the Sir Walter Raleigh, George Thompson, Roman Emperor, Victory and Lyttelton. He was one of the early members of the Canterbury Kilwinning Masonic Lodge. Mr Anderson is survived by his wife and two sons, Captain IJenry Anderson, wharf superintendent for the Union Company at Auckland, and Captain A. Anderson, master of the s.s. Tees. His eldest son, Mr James Anderson* who was prominently connected with the Territorial movement, died at Lyttelton ten years ago, and his youngest son, Mr Stanley Anderson, died during the influenza epidemic in 1918 at Melbourne. At the., time he was engaged as chief officer of one of the Burns Philp steamers. Mr Anderson's funeral will take place at Lyttelton oi\#Tuesday.
