KINDERGARTEN WORK.
Selection of Carnegie Candidate. At the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association Mrs H. Thacker presided. Also present were: Alesdames J. R. Evans, Hadfleld, Peverill, Hitchcock, Bishop, Bundy, Stuart, Hayward. Robinson, Aitken. Rodda, Retallick, Powell, Aliss M’lllraith and the secretary. Airs Thacker referred to the loss that the kindergarten had sustained by the death of Sir Thomas Sidey, and a motion of sympathy with Lady Sidey was passed in silence. The late Sir Thomas Sidey was honorary solicitor to the Kindergarten Union, its constitution was, for the main part, prepared by him, and his expert advice was always freely given. At an executive meeting of the union, held in Wellington, the Hon J. A. Hanan was asked to accept the office of honorary solicitor. Mrs Peppier reported that she had been present at the meeting when the second Carnegie candidate was chosen. The selection had taken place on the same lines as on the former occasion. Each candidate was subject to a close questioning by representatives from the four kindergarten centres, as well as by members of the men’s selection committee. These were Mr Lambourne, Professor Hunter and Air Parkinson. Miss Wilkie, of Dunedin, the successful candidate, was a composer of songs suitable for children. She had gained a part of the B.A. degree, was of a pleasing personality, and was well fitted to bring back to the Dominion much that would further the cause of kindergarten. A letter from Aliss Hull, asking for temporary leave of absence from duties, was received and agreed to. Airs Bishop, convener to the Xew Brighton committee, said the school wa* now, owing to the kindness of Mrs Curnow, provided with a piano. Sunbeam reported that Mrs Chilman had presented a doll’s house to the school. This would be disposed of for the benefit of the funds. All schools reported an absence of sickness. All committees are busy with schemes for raising money. An application to be enrolled as a student was received from Miss E. B. Alarriott.
