The Justicia.

A Carden Corner

ALTHOUGH Brazil has the reputation of furnishing some of the most brilliant and valuable of- our floral treasures, it scarcely measures up to the standard of other countries like China, Japan,

India <?r South Africa, so far as popular garden plants are concerned. Possibly climate has something to do with this, as so many of the plants and shrubs from Brazil, being semi-tropical, require some degree of protection in climates such as ours. Of such is the border shrub shown here— Justicia carnea. While hardy in favoured localities, it does best as a greenhouse subject. The erect growths are crowned by panicles of rosy flowers, and are very decorative, having great lasting qualities, either on the plant or when cut. The name commemorates a celebrated Scottish horticulturist. T. Tustice. and the plant came from Rio de Janeiro in 1827.
