FIREMAN PRAISED.

Attempted Rescue of Drowned Woman. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 17. The action of a fireman of the steamer Ardenvohr diving from the vessel to the rescue of an apparently drowning woman was praised by the Coroner at an inquest into the death of Janet Moss, twenty-three years of age, whose body was found floating in the harbour on Monday. W. J. Jones, the fireman, when he saw the body in the water, immediately dived overboard and brought the girl to the wharf landing, a distance of about one hundred yards. Members of the crew tried artificial respiration without success. Senior-Sergeant Calwell said the action of the fireman in jumping so promptly off the ship from such a height was very commendable. After returning a finding that deceased drowned herself while in a state of acute nervous disturbance, the Coroner said he highly commended the action of the fireman in attempting to rescue what he imagined to be a drowning woman. He would send a report of his finding to the ship’s agents.
