Championship Teams
Arrive,
Members of the Auckland athletic team, under the management of Mr 11. L. Towers, of the Mount Albert Grammar School, arrived in Christchurch this morning and were welcomed by Mr M. Leadbetter, president of the Canterbury Centre, and officials. Alan Elliott and W. J. Savidan, Olympic representatives, are with the team and look in first-rate form. J. Wade and E. Lawrence, cyclists, of Wanganui, also arrived this morning, and the balance of their team will come to-morrow. The Wellington team, under the management of Mr A. C. Kitto. is also due to-morrow morning. Arrangements have been made with the Union Company to hold back the ferry boat on Saturday evening to enable the North Islanders to compete at English Park in the evening and proceed north after the sports. The first event of the championships will take place at Lancaster Park at 4.15 p.m. on Friday afternoon. New Records Expected. The New Zealand championships, which wili be held at Lancaster Park on Saturday, should produce some really excellent running, particularly the 100ydi». With A. Elliot and Walker (Auckland) doing 9 4-ssec, C. Jenkins (Wellington) lOsec, and Canterbury men like M'Farlane and (Jordon doing 10 l-usec, the 100yds will be won by inches. The 880yds is going to be the race of the day. (J. Broadway, the present New Zealand half-mile champion. will meet strong challenges from D. E. Anderson (Canterbury), who beat him by inches in tli<v Canterbury championship, and Ogg (Wellington). The meeting should be one of the best ever staged in New Zealand, and, with so many runners on the top of their form, records are bound to be broken. The preliminaries will be held on Friday at 4.15 p.m. and the finals on Saturday at 2 p.m.
