Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., arrived from Wellington this morning. Messrs A. C. Wilkin (Auckland) and W. J. Worboys (London) are registered; at the United Service Hotel. Mr D. Jones, chairman of the Meat Board, returned from Wellington this morning. Sir James Mills is expected to arrive from Wellington to-morrow morning on his way to Hanmer Springs. Mr S. E. Shayle-George, Lyttelton manager for the Union Steam Ship Company, is on holiday leave. Mr John O’Regan has been appointed a member of the Motueka Licensing Committee. Mr R. H. Bailey has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the Rangiora Domain Board caused by the death of Mr Frederick Horrell. Messrs Ernest Chappell (Hanmer) and B. D. Hart (Nelson) have been appointed Justices of the Peace, states the “ Gazette.” Messrs W. H. Abbott, A. Anderson E. J. Cowan, J. P. M’Evedy and F. W. Scott have been elected as members to the North Rakaia River Board. Mr H. Hogwood, of the Christchurch office of A. H. Turnbull and Co., has been appointed shipping clerk at Lyttelton. Mr J. M’Pherson, who has been appointed superintendent of the Christchurch Botanical Gardens, left Invercargill this morning for Christchurch. Messrs R. A. Anderson, H. S. E. Turner, W. E. Reynolds, V. O’Donnell and J. Cassie were passengers from the north this'morning. Sub-Inspector G. B. Edwards, of the Christchurch Police Station, will go to Greymouth on Monday to relieve Inspector Lopdell for one month. Messrs L. M. Sinclair (Hunterville), W. Bishop and W. T. Northorp (Wellington) and J. H. Fotheringham (Dunedin) are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs V. J. Rowell and D. Rowell (Wellington), B. Mills (Blenheim), and J. A. Linsday (Invercargill) are staying at the New City Hotel. Mr David Highet, who since 1902 has been manager at Dunedin for Messrs Robert Malcolm, Limited, of Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, has been appointed a director of the company. Mr J. A. Hyndman, of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha Company, Osaka, Japan, is staying at the United Service Hotel. He is making a tour of New Zealand on behalf of his company. Mr O. C. Cox, who has been manager of the D.1.C., Christchurch, for the past sixteen years, has announced his decision to retire early in February. Keen regret is expressed by the D.I.C. staff at Mr Cox’s decision. Mr H. L. S. Havyatt, a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, has been appointed by the Rt Hon Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice of New Zealand, a Commissioner of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in New South Wales. Passengers on to-day’s express from Greymouth included Messrs J. Terrill (Melbourne), R. A. Mitchell (Gisborne), Mrs Gilbert (Ohai), Mrs Ford and family, Mrs Williamson (Dunedin), Miss O’Neill (Auckland), Mr and Mrs T. F. Savage, Miss D. Savage, Miss B. Barrett (Wellington), Messrs D. I. Macdonald, R. C. Burns, F. Bostock, H. Yeadon, D. Dennehy, Mrs H. Smith and Miss L. Lopdell (Christchurch). The death occurred yesterday, at the age of seventy-seven years, of Mr George Fraser, a former Mayor of the Borough of Northcote and well known in business circles throughout Auckland province. He was born at Matakana and was the eldest son of the late Mr George Fraser, who in 1862 started an engineering business in Mechanics Bay, which two years later became the firm of Fraser and Tinne, and after Mr Tinne’s retirement in 1881 became George Fraser and Son, Ltd. Mr Fraser’s sister is Mrs W. Broadhurst, of Christchurch.
