ROUND THE SUBURBS.

Waltham School. The monthly meeting of the Waltham School Committee was held last evening, Mr J. J. Hurley presiding. The headmaster (Mr D. Brown) reported the roll number at the close of the school to be 329 boys, 297 girls. The health of the pupils in all classes had been excellent. Fifty-two pupils had gained their Proficiency. In the baseball rounders competition the A team suffered one loss during the series and the B team was unbeaten. It was decided to hold the .school picnic at Motukarara on Thursday, February 16. Hot water, tea, sugar and milk would be provided, and children up to the age of five years would receive toys. The sports programme was left in the hands of the headmaster and staff. It was reported that the unveiling of a memorial tablet to the late Mr C. Bobbins, a former teacher aj the school, would be held on Thursday, February 23. u St lEartto* Library. The monthly meeting of the committee of the St Martins Public Library was held on Wednesday, Mr J. E. Jones presiding. The resignation of Mr M’Lean, who has removed to Auckland, was accepted with regret. During the month there were five new subscribers and twenty renewals. The following books had been placed on the shelves: —Fiction 44, non-fiction 10, juvenile 1, replacements 1, total 56. Thirty-flv.e books had been repaired by the ladies. A credit balance of £ls 2s 9d was shown and the sum of £ls was allocated for the purchase of new books. It was decided to close the books on January 28 and hold the next meeting on February 1 and the annual meeting on Monday, February 6. Shirley seniors batted first against Maireliau, and were dismissed for the small score of 68, J. Watson (24) being the only batsman to make a stand. At the close of play Shirley had five Maireliau wickets down for 83.

Shirley senior B batted first against Working Men's Club, and were all out for 44. At the close of play Working Men’s Club had 271 for eight wickets. Shirley juniors fielded against Elmwood, who were dismissed for 213 runs. Bowling for Shirley, Bremner took five for 71, and Hannigan three for 31. When stumps were drawn Shirley had 117 for six wickets (Hannigan 39 and Savage 48 not out). Shirley third grade defeated Ricoarton by 79 runs. Scores: Shirley, first innings 33. second 135 for four wickets (S. Wentworth 39, Johns 41, Algie 29). Riccarton, first innings 63, second innings 26. Bowling for Shirtey S. Wentworth took five for 17 and six for 6. Spreydon Library. At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Spreydon Public Library the following members were present:— Messrs Jolly (chairman), Langford, Fehsenfeldt, Mesdames Marks, M’Dowell, Thompson and Eaton. The librarian reported that during December five new subscribers were enrolled and fifty-four new books were placed on the shelves, making a total of 2821 books in the library. Through the efforts of the Social Committee the sum of £3 7s had been raised in aid of the library funds.
