LATE MRS EDITH KERR.
DEATH OF PIONEER. Mrs Edith Kerrfi widow of the late John Kerr of Burwood, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Williams, Wainoni Road, on Christmas night, in her eighty-first year. She was the last survivor of the family of the late Mr D. W. Hamilton, and was born in Ashford, Derbyshire. Mrs Kerr came to New Zealand with her parents, two brothers and one sister, in the ship Joseph Fletcher, arriving in Lyttelton in October, 1856. In 1866 her father bought land at New Brighton and built a house known as “ The Grange.” There the church services of the early days were held and conducted by the late Messrs Twentyman, Heywood, Bishop Harper and others. Mrs Kerr had been a member of the Canterbury Pilgrims’ Association for many years, and although not able to take any active part of late, she was always interested in its movements. She leaves a family of two daughters and three sons, sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grand-children. Her husband predeceased her twelve years ago. Although of a quiet, retiring disposition, Mrs Kerr was loved and esteemed by all who came in contact with her. The funeral took place at the Burwood churchyard, and was largely attended. Many beautiful wreaths and floral tributes were sent.
