RINKS PLAY.

Two Rounds Completed at Tournament. N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. Fer Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 13. The first two rounds of the rinks championship were played in the New Zealand bowling tournament at Wellington to-day. Splendid progress is being made and a record was achieved with the completion of the singles on the preceding day. Further pairs games are not likely before next Wednesday. The weather again was delightful to-day. The Australian rink (Frost, Marshall, Bersley, Gumming) had a great contest with Thorndon, which was skipped by Nancarrow. On the twentieth head both were three. They started driving and when they had done only five bowls remained on the green. Cumming drove to take Thorndon bowls out, but took out his own shot bowl. He redeemed the error by drawing a pearler with his last. On the twenty-third head Thorndon was five behind. Cumming had the shot. Trying to draw another, Cumming was a shade pacey and carried the jack to his opponents for six. In spite of the reverse, Cummings rink regained the lead and won 32-28. Maxwell Walker’s rink from Auckland kept the upper hand of Martin’s rink from Hataitai. On the twentythird head Hataitai was lying the shot. Walker rested in for two. Martin failed to save and Walker, with an oldtime trailer, carried the jack to the back woods for four. His card included six threes. In the first round Lambert (Thorndon) had a close go with White (Hastings). There were ties of 9-9 on the tenth head, 18-18 on the twentieth, 19-19 on the twenty-second and 20-20 on the twenty-fourth. When the skips crossed over at the twenty-sixth head, only six bowls were on the green, five of Lambert’s. White drove and removed one and disturbed another, and Lambert scored three to win. P. Smith (Thorndon) lost the first game by one to Rolls (Foxton), and in the second game, when one down on the last head against a strong Timaru rink, scored two to win. Bremner’s West End rink from Auckland, who won the Rinks event at Wellington four years ago, started off with a good win against Woolley (Hataitia), but lost to Mattar ton) in the second round. Smart (New Plymouth) went down to M’Whannell’s (Hataitai) rink in the second round. J. B. Reid (Lyall Bay) with a strong rink lost to Hutchison (Dunedin), whose rink played great bowls. Barry (Palmerston North) put up the record score so far of 43 against Shepherd (Hataitai), while Holland (Putaruru) scored 40 against Whiting (Hutt). Maxwell Walker has started well with two wins to his credit. He won the Rinks event at Christchurch last year. M’Comish (Marton) is making a great show with his rink and will extend all oponents. Brighting (Hataitai) pulled off a great victory against Boulton (New Plymouth) byg one point. The Timaru rink skipped by Currie, while playing good bowls, are not having the best of luck. They are two down. Following are the results of the day’s play:— RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. FIRST ROUND. Section A. Lawne (Lyall Bay) 31. Bull (Levin) 15. Harper (Gtahuhu) 24, Conder (Island Bay) 21.
