TOBACCO CULTURE.
Experimental Plot# at Papanui.
Experimental plots of tobacco plants have been laid out on a quarter of an acre of land in Langdon’s Road, Papanui, made available for the purpose by the Christchurch Technical -College Board of Governors. The idea of the experiments is to show the possibilities of tobacco culture as a means of providing light work for partially-disabled returned soldiers. The plants, which were transferred from the Botanical Gardens on November 28, 1932, are now half-grown, and one pliant has produced ten leaves tvelve inches long and sixteen inches wide. The average height of a good plant is about three feet. It is stated that there is no reason why tobaccogrowing should not be made a very profitable industry in Canterbury, particularly if the plants are grown on the sunny sjopes of Banks Peninsula.
