Successful Meeting At Ashburton. RANBY WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, January 14. The motor-cycle race meeting organised by the Pioneer Sports Club and the A.M.C.C, was held here to-day, under ideal conditions. The track at the racecourse was in splendid order. Riders were present from all parts of Canterbury and Otago. Results (one lap equals a mile and a quarter) : R. Ranby, the prominent Christchurch rider, annexed the championship event with ease, and Oakley, a local man rode a good race to get second. At the end of the first lap Le Vaillant was leading from the bunch, including the placed men. At the second lap E. Brown moved into the lead. Hunter was third and Ahrens was moving up fast, and was lying sixth. Brown was still leading at the third lap and Ahrens was fourth. Hunter moved into the lead in the back straight, and Veale took second place a little later. Ahrens was a close fourth. Times—4min 46 3-ssec, 4min 46 4-ssee, 4min 51sec. A.J.S.) 25sec 4. Browne and Le Vaillant were the first and second for the entire distance. Homer moved into third place in the second lap. Oakley was catching Homer and Le Vaillant when Homer hit a bad bump and swerved into Oakley, almost causing a spill. Oakley’s boot was ripped in half. Times—Smin 28sec, Gmia 31 4-ssec, 6min 17 3-ssec. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. (Three laps.) J. T. Oakley (3£h.p. A.J.S., 15sec 1 A. Crighton (3Jh.p. O.K. Supreme), 22£sec 2 L. Homer (23h.p. O.K. Supreme), 27Jsec 8 Times—3min 25 l-ssec, 3min 38sec and 3min 48 3-ssec. SOUTH ISLAND MIDDLE-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (six laps)—R. G. Ranby (3£ h.p. H.D.) 1, J. T. Oakley (31 h.p. A.J.S.) 2, K. Craig (3£ h.p. 0.E.C.-J.A.P.) 3, A. Crighton (3£ h.p. O.K. Supreme) 4. Ranby had the race won easily. From the rolling start he hit the pace in the first lap and established a comfortable lead. He then took the race easy. Oakley rode well to get second place. M. PIONEER OPEN HANDICAP —F. G. Le Vaillant (23 h.p. Velocette), 50sec, 1; A. Vale (3£ h.p. Ariel), 20see, 2; F. Cross (3£ h.p. Norton), 30sec, 3. Le Vaillant led for two laps, and then was headed by Preddy, who went to the lead in the third lap. The latter increased his lead with the next two laps and then petered out in front of the grandstand within a few yards of the finishing lines. Times—6min 20 4-ssec, smin 52 3-ssec, 6min 3 3-ssec.
