A severe earthquake shook the West- j ern States of the United States, from Rawlins, in Wyoming, to Long Beach in Colifornia, on Tuesday 7 night, but the ! damage was confined to broken win- j dows and crockery. The earthquake stopped clocks in j many places. No injuries have been reported. The shock rocked the entire State of Nevada, and at Gerlach, in that State, ! a large water-tower was knocked down. Reno was also sharply shaken. The walls of the Californian State Capitol buildings at Sacramento creaked and rattled. In the great San Francisco earthquake of April 18-19, 1906, 500 lives were lost and the damage, which was chiefly due to the tremendous tire that followed, was 400,000,000 dollars.
