To Avoid Waste.

Dear Sir, —At last it seems that one large local body has taken pity on the relief worker, and is opposed to the wasteful distribution policy of the Unemployment Board, for the Wellington City Council is to formulate a scheme of useful works at an increased rate of pay. It is high time all other local bodies gave this serious consideration. When one considers the huge number of relief workers engaged 44 pottering about ” on roads, together with the cost of their transport, tools, etc., it is little wonder the council called a halt. What has happened to Mr W. M. Tyers’s suggested gold prospecting scheme? Surely this warranted every consideration as a means of relieving the unemployed burden. Especially here on the West Coast it appeared the soundest solution offered. No doubt the Government will crucify it with rules and regulations that will make it unworkable. It is to be hoped that the Wellington Council’s attitude will be emulated by other bodies, also Mr Tyers’s suggestion given more publicity. Things seem to go back day after day and we have no one to give us a lead.—l am, etc., CUT 10s.
