CHARGE OF ASSAULT.
Screams Were Heard by Constable. SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. Allegations were made by the police this morning against William Alexander Nicholls, a motor driver, aged 47, that he had attacked his sister after first presenting a loaded shotgun at her. Nicholls was charged with assaulting his sister, Ilanna Mary Ann Blair, yesterday. He was remanded to appear on Tuesday next. Sub-Inspector Edwards said that Constable R. F. Leith was cycling along Selwyn Street yesterday and when passing number 187 he heard a woman screaming and calling for assistance. Going inside, he found that Nicholls had his sister down and was throttling her. The constable had some difficulty in breaking Nicholls’s hold. Later the constable was told that Nicholls had presented a loaded shotgun at his sister and that she and her daughter had taken it from him and thrown it out of the window before the constable arrived. The constable found the gun outside. It was fortunate for Nicholls that the constable had happened to be passing. Otherwise he might have been before the Court on a much more serious charge. The police desired time to make more inquiries into the case.
