INTERPRETATION SOUGHT
Case Before the Arbitration Court. An application for an interpretation of the Boot Operatives’ Award came before the Arbitration Court this morning at the first sitting of the present session. Mr Justice Frazer presided and with him on the Bench were Mr W. Cecil Prime (employers’ assessor) and Mr A. L. Monteith (employees’ assessor). The question for decision was whether Messrs Duckworth, Turner and Co. were entitled to carry on work in their slipper department outside the teams of the award. The broader question involved was whether workers who were employed in the manufacture of slippers which did not require the tacking on of insoles, lasting or trimming, were covered by the award. Mr C. Watts, secretary of the New Zealand Federated Boot Trade Industrial Association of Workers, appeared for the union and Mr 11. B. Duckworth for the employers. The Court ruled that the workers specified in the question were not covered by the award. Hairdressers’ Apprentices. The Hairdressers’ Apprenticeship Order of 1925 was amended to provide for a three years’ apprenticeship instead of five years as formerly, the rates of wages to be: First year 12s, second year 18s, third year £1 7s 6d.
