Christmas Cheer Concert A concert to give r*hriatmas cheer for the unemployed of Papanui was organised by the combined Bible classes of the Anglican, Presbyterisn and Methodist Churches of Papanui and held at St Paul’s Schoolroom on Thursday night. Mr V. French was M.C. A greatly applauded item was '• A Meeting of the Coalition Party’s Cabinet.' 4 Mr K. Shlrlaw was “Mr Forbes” and Mr Bert Pullen was ** Mr Coates.” Other members of the " cabinet. ” were Messrs Allan Oharlesworth. D. Dailey, H. Biggs, R. Borgfcldt and J. Charlesworth. A scene from Hollywood was given by Masters Melville Baynes. Murray Reid. Nelson Tillman, Hector Orchard, Phillip Luras and Ron Rowberry. with Arthur Young as “ director.” A ” Wax Works ” display was given by Misses G. Dailey, M. Williamson. Peters, Green. Biggs. O. Bandy, E. Mulholland and Cone; s pianoforte solo by Mr Colin Taylor and a song hv Miss Betty Thompson: a duet hv Misses Joan and Betty Thompson. An orchestral item by St Paul’s Bible class, a gympastic display by St Giles's boys, and other items made a most enjoyable concert. The hall was crowded. Cycle Beoes. Tlie Papanui Amateur Cycle Club continued their junior races at the Papanui Domain on Wednesday night. The medal for the aggregate number of points in all races was won by L. Bryenton with 9, and J. The twenty-eighth anniversary of the Sunday School in connection with the Linwood Baptist Church was celebrated during the week-end. One of tlie outstanding features was the singing of a children’s choir of 200 voices. Rev Basil Met son, of the Sydenham Methodist Church, was the morning preacher. The afternoon service was taken by the Rev Lawrence Rogers, M.A., minister of St David’s Presbyterian Church. The Rev N. J*. Wood, minister of the church, addressed the evening congregation. All the services were well attended by the parents of the Sunday School scholars. On Monday evening all the children of the Sunday School were entertained at tea. After the tea the annual prize-giving service was held. Mr H. T. Falla, superintendent of the Sunday School, presided over a large attendance. Miss A. Moon presented the prizes to the children. Mis* (i. Egan, secretary of the Sunday School, read the annual report. Tht* showed that the total membership of the school was 237. Special mention of the value of the increased accommodation was made. Mr F. Pyne, treasurer of the Sunday School, presented the balance-sheet, which showed a small credit for the year. During the evening two pageant* were enacted by some of the Sunday School scholars, under the direction of Miss Freda Buchanan. Social and Sane*. The usual meeting of the Star of New Brighton Tent. 1.0. R., was held on Tuesday, when CTiief Ruler Brother A. Bonnlngton presided over a fair attendance of nn-mbers. The syllabus drawn up by the appointed committee was adopted. The Christmas social and dance was held after the meeting, when over sixty people were present. Music was supplied by Brother Pockson, Sister Hull and Mrs Hastings. Games were won by Brothers Bascand and Cockle and Miss Pollard, while the dances were won as follows:—Monte Carlo, Brother Pockson and Mrs Turner: statue dance, Mr R. Moj*es and partner; lucky spot, Mr W. Moses and Miss E. Clark: lucky snowball. Tui Dean. The tea cosy prize was won by Brother Tindall. Extras were played by Mr R. Paddy, and Brother Woodward entertained with a solo.
